This is the fifth AL voting period after eight in the books. The MLB Blog Poll votes on the MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of Year
candidates in each league throughout the regular baseball season. In
doing so, you get a cumulative snapshot of the award winners, instead
of the single vote. Previous blog poll results and voter comments can be found at the links below the fold.
A.L. MVP Voting:
- Josh Hamilton - 44%
- Carlos Quentin - 29%
- Manny Ramirez - 15%
- Milton Bradley - 6%
- Kevin Youkilis - 3%
- Ichiro Suzuki - 2%
- Ian Kinsler - 1%
- Justin Morneau - 1%
A.L. Cy Young Voting:
- Cliff Lee - 36%
- Scott Kazmir - 23%
- Daisuke Matsuzaka - 10%
- Roy Halladay - 7%
- Joe Saunders - 6%
- Ervin Santana - 6%
- Zach Greinke - 6%
- Shaun Marcum - 3%
- John Danks - 2%
- Jose Contreras - 1%
A.L. Rookie of the Year Voting:
- Jacoby Ellsbury - 39%
- Evan Longoria - 26%
- David Murphy - 18%
- Nick Blackburn - 8%
- Greg Smith - 7%
- Joba Chamberlain - 2%
- Ben Francisco -1%
| - The Devil Rays went from contending to best in baseball with the callup of Longoria and the return of Kazmir |
|
| - My
third choice for MVP is Ian Kinsler. Kinsler is 3rd in runs created,
4th in VORP and is one of the few middle infielders having a strong
offensive season in the AL. |
- MVP:
1. CF Josh Hamilton, TEX: "The Natural" is chasing the Triple Crown.
2. LF Carlos Quentin, CHW: Think the Diamondbacks are regretting choosing Eric Byrnes over him right about now?
3. Manny Ramirez, BOS: Think he's happy to have 500 behind him? Three straight games with a HR.
Cy Young:
1. SP Cliff Lee, CLE: Lee isn't untouchable anymore, but his 8-1, 1.88 line is keeping the Indians in contention.
2. SP Daisuke Matsuzaka, BOS: Despite a high walk total, he's 8-0 with a 2.53 ERA. Now he gets 15 days to rest his arm.
3. SP Joe Saunders, LAA: Who needs Lackey and Escobar when you've got Joe Saunders and fellow surprise Ervin Santana?
Rookie of the Year:
1.
CF Jacoby Ellsbury, BOS: Seven steals in three games. Leads the majors
in SB despite not playing full-time. On pace to shatter Red Sox single
season record.
2: SP Nick Blackburn, MIN: No one knew who Blackburn
was coming in, but he's providing a shot in the arm to the Santana-less
Twins.
3. CF David Murphy, TEX: Former Boston castoff is doing just fine in Texas, thank you very much. |
| - How
is it the team with the best record in the American League only gets
one player considered for one of the top three awards, and that only
because the rookie class behind Red Sox CF Jacoby Ellsbury is so week? |
- I am almost tempted to place Bradley ahead of Hamilton as I believe Bradley is having a major impact on Hamilton.
Kazmir
has been downright nasty and has dominated since being activated. While
others have had similar starts, none have been likely to sustain the
success.
I would have preferred to vote for Francisco with my
final ROY vote. I love the energy he has brought to the Indians and he
has undeniably been the teams best hitter. |
| |
| The rookie
class in the American League is not as exciting as the NL, but Murphy
has been consistent since day 1, and Ellsbury's stolen base totals were
a surprise to me. I thought it was a typo at first, but he really has
stolen 27 bases so far. |
